Healthy Food for Your Teeth

Grabbing a snack that’s both satisfying and healthy for your smile can be challenging as often the most convenient thing on hand is laden with sugar.  Shawnessy Dentist - Dr. Andy Hoe – wants dental patients in Calgary to be able to enjoy food and keep healthy, vibrant teeth.

This South West Calgary Dentist explains that the best thing patients can do for their dental health is pay attention to what they are putting in their mouth.  Gum disease and tooth decay does not occur without an environment that is high in acids – a by-product of residual sugars (carbohydrates) that interacts with plaque.  Obviously brushing and flossing your teeth daily is the biggest contributor to great oral health – and of course seeing your Calgary Dentist for regular cleanings and exams – but making smart food choices, especially when it comes to snacks can have a huge impact on your mouth and teeth’s health.

Limiting your exposure to sugar (which includes refined carbohydrates) is an important step in creating and maintaining optimum dental health.  Bacteria that is present in plaque feeds off the sugars in food stuck between teeth and on tooth surfaces – this creates acid that eats away at the enamel of teeth, causing cavities, and contributes to the formation of more plaque which irritates gums – leading to gingivitis and gum disease.

Reaching for foods like raw vegetables, cheese, fibrous grains, and certain fruits goes a long way in the fight against cavities and gum disease.  Avoiding sugary energy drinks, which can contain up to 47 grams of sugar in one serving, will also help keep sugar bugs to a minimum – and drinking more water not only washes tooth surfaces but keeps the body hydrated and able to fight off infections.  Having the occasional ‘sweet treat’ is fine – even Calgary Dentists indulge now and then – but keeping starchy, sugary treats to a minimum will help maximize your oral health and overall health.

Dr. Andy Hoe of Bite Dental in SW Calgary welcomes new patients and inquiries regarding dental procedures and treatment options.  Located in Shawnessy, Dr. Hoe and his team at Bite Dental look forward to helping you attain optimum dental health – call today to schedule an appointment.
