How To Tell If Your Child Needs Braces

Shawnessy Dentist – Dr. Andy Hoe – is a Calgary Dentist and father who understands how important a child’s smile is.  Concerns about tooth eruption, size, and position is a common issue for today’s busy parents – so Dr. Hoe has some tips on how to tell when it’s time to seek professional advice.

Baby teeth, or primary dentition, begin to erupt at the age of six months – with the lower central teeth being the first ones to appear.  By the age of three a child has a full complement of baby teeth and these teeth have a very important job of keeping space for the awaiting adult teeth to erupt.  Care of baby teeth is paramount – even though these teeth are supposed to shed between the age of six to twelve their role in the health of the developing adult teeth should not be minimized.  Habits like thumb and finger sucking can cause baby teeth to move out of their ideal position and can even hamper normal arch and palate formation.  When baby teeth are not in correct alignment there is a very good chance that adult teeth erupt out of position.  Habits like thumb sucking can cause a narrow palate and  upper arch - this can create a lack of space for erupting adult teeth – leading to crooked teeth and bite issues.

Early intervention is essential to establish that your child’s teeth erupt in a healthy position and any concerns are addressed as early as possible so that any speech, eating, and habit issues are corrected.  Waiting to see if your child’s teeth straighten out on their own may lead to further issues down the road – so don’t hesitate to see your Calgary Dentist for a consultation as soon as possible.

Once your child’s adult teeth have erupted it’s important to maintain regular visits to the dentist for cleanings and exams.  During the dental exam your dentist will examine position of teeth, arch formation, and jaw development.  Again, early diagnosis of concerns or potential problems goes a long way to ensure treatment needs are kept to a minimum and little issues don’t become major.
