Is It Safe To Have My Teeth Cleaned During Pregnancy?

Pregnant dental patients are often confused regarding the safety of seeing a Calgary Dentist for a routine dental cleaning during pregnancy.   Regular dental cleanings during pregnancy are highly recommended as fluctuating hormone levels can cause havoc in the mouth – contributing to puffy gums, gingivitis and gum disease.

Recent studies suggest a link between gum disease and premature delivery – meaning that regular dental cleanings during pregnancy are not only good for the expectant Mother’s health, but also the health of the developing baby.  During pregnancy, hormones change all tissues in the body – including the mouth – leading to 60%-75% of pregnant women experiencing inflammation or the gums (gingivitis).  What’s interesting to note is that regardless of which tissues of the body are inflamed, the result is an overall increase in certain hormones and molecules that enter the blood stream and cause contraction of the uterine wall – potentially leading to premature delivery and low birth weight.

Dental cleanings during pregnancy help control the hyper responses of tissues that hormonal changes create – and help maintain healthy tissue and overall oral health.  Our previous blogs have explained that during a dental cleaning plaque and calculus are removed from tooth and root surfaces.  Plaque is a soft deposit of bacteria – Calculus is the hardened version – when left on tooth surfaces bacteria that is found in plaque and calculus feed off carbohydrates in our diet - causing acidity that results in swollen, puffy, easy to bleed gums.

As most adult dental patients need their teeth cleaned every  4 – 6 months; skipping scheduled cleanings during pregnancy can result in an increase in plaque and calculus – and a heightened level of inflammation.  Though pregnancy is often a very hectic and tiring time for many women – finding time to visit your Shawnessy Dentist for a dental cleaning is an important step in the maintenance of good oral health and protection of the health of the unborn baby.

Dr. Andy Hoe of Bite Dental in Shawnessy strives to bring awareness of the value of routine dental care to all patients.  A family man himself; Dr. Hoe and his staff ensure that patients are made aware of treatment solutions and methods that contribute to an enhanced level of dental health, and invite patients to contact the office to discuss dental health concerns and treatment goals.
