Pediatric Dentistry in South Calgary

babyWhy are baby teeth important?  Baby teeth serve two major functions – speech and chewing development and saving space for your child’s permanent teeth.  Because baby teeth (primary dentition) are considered non-permanent; often there is a lack of relevance placed on these teeth – but the reality is that a child’s first set of teeth have a long-term impact on the development of adult teeth and a person’s overall oral health.

Dr. Andy Hoe is a dentist in South Calgary who treats young patients in his Shawnessy Dental Office.  A father to two young children; Dr. Hoe is only too familiar with the many questions parents have regarding their children’s dental health – and acknowledges the need to give children a gentle introduction to dental care.  Bringing your child to a Calgary Dentist should happen by the time they are one year old, or within six months of the eruption of their first tooth.  As crazy as it may seem, but babies are at risk of tooth decay, and even though they might not have a lot of teeth in their mouth – these little pearly whites still need to be cleaned, even though ‘substantial food’ isn’t being consumed yet.

Baby teeth remain in place until the permanent teeth are ready to erupt.  Premature loss of a baby tooth, due to decay or trauma, can negatively impact the still developing adult tooth and create a loss of space for the permanent tooth to erupt in to.  Baby teeth not only hold space for emerging adult teeth but also act as a guide for erupting teeth to follow.  The loss of primary teeth often causes adult teeth to erupt crookedly and in poor alignment – leading to bite and dental health issues.

One of the biggest mistakes parents and care-givers can make is to take for granted the important role baby teeth have in a child’s dental development.  Excitement for the tooth fairy to pay a visit is cute – but should never minimize the benefit of keeping primary teeth for an appropriate length of time, and in optimum health.  Encouraging your child at a young age to value their teeth, and understand the importance of daily brushing and flossing, will have a positive impact on their oral health.  Regular visits to a Dentist in South Calgary for cleanings and exams is a great way to maintain your child’s dental health and monitor tooth eruption – and early intervention will ensure that any crowding or spacing concerns are addressed.

Dr. Andy Hoe and his staff at Bite Dental in Shawnessy welcome enquiries from parents regarding dental care for children.  For more information regarding Pediatric Dentistry, or to schedule an appointment – call Bite Dental today – 403.201.2483
